Mindless Eating
Sometime our environment can cause us to overeat without thinking about our food consumption.
When this happens, we tend to start "growing out" in places that we will not like.
Fortunately, we can program ourselves to start focusing on our intake - here's how:
1. Slow Down - The faster a person eats, the less likely they are to pay attention to their food.
A possible solution is to set a timer or alarm for 20 minutes, then make sure your meal lasts for that long.
People who tend to "wolf down" their meals will find this to be challenging, yet rewarding.
2. Savor Your Food - Start your meal by taking very small bites and allow yourself to enjoy all of the details
of your meal, such as the taste, temperature and texture. Once you start to pay attention to these details,
your awareness will increase and you also will gain more satisfaction from your food!
3. Beware the "Eating Pause" - The eating pause is that point in your meal when you rest your utensils
down and stop eating for a few minutes. This is your body telling you it's had enough. What usually
happens next is mindless eating...you look down at your plate and realize there is still food on your
plate...and start eating again to finish your meal. The trick here is to listen to your body...and when the
pause occurs, make it permanent, and be done at that point.
4. Label Seduction - Human beings tend to fall for the "healthy" or "low fat" labels they see. It has been
found that people who think they are eating healthy, tend to overeat by 40%. Either that, or they will
compensate by adding extra mayo or getting desert because they feel they have "earned" a treat. Of course
this compensation is what will lead to increased calories!
5. Do Not Eat By The Clock - If you are one of those folks who eats at a specified time every day, you could
be eating even when your not truly hungry. It is more important to pay attention to your body telling you when
it's hungry...it usually knows best!!
6. Avoid Distractions - You should not eat in front of the TV, or computer, or while reading the newspaper,
because it's too easy to forget about what you are eating. If you are going to eat in front of the TV, say for a
football game, you should place a finite amount of food out so you don't just mindlessly eat.
7. Be Satisfied - When we become more in tune with our body, we will be able to gain more satisfaction
from what we put into it. We will find that only eating what our body calls for will keep us from becoming
a
super-sized society.
These are just a few thoughts on this subject. Certainly diet, in conjunction with regular exercise, will lead
to not only healthy bodies, but also healthy minds. We will become better business people if our minds
are focused on our business more than our bellies.
